Fact Checked By James A Rockey | Updated on

It very hard to say how far back the superstition goes, but among the fishermen, there exists a belief that carrying banana on a boat brings bad luck. Fishers believed that when fishing starts bad and continues that way, then there must be a member who might have brought a banana abroad. If the charter boat captain finds out banana itself or a banana muffin, then it is speedily flung overboard.

There are no clear reasons that exist as to why no bananas on the boat. However, the following are common explanation as to why people deemed so:

1. Dangerous cargo.

In the way back 1700s, when top-heavy ships sink, nothing else would be found other than precious bananas floating on the surface. Due to this, people concluded that the transportation of the fruit itself led to these naval mishaps. This assumption made bananas become known as an omen of misfortune and danger to ships.

2.Too fast for fish

This is one of the big Plausible reasons as to why no bananas on the fishing boats. You know why?  Because bananas spoil very fast. Fishers, therefore, would concentrate on moving this fruit to their destination rather than fishing. This will make them not successful in catching the fish. So, people have preferred not to carry bananas on their boat if they wish to practice fishing.

3. Spoiled other fruits

Bananas are known to give off ethylene gas. This gas fastens the ripening of other fruits and thus spoil quickly. Due to that, those fruits would not reach the destination in the required form. That’s why bananas are deemed to be a source of bad luck for ships transporting other types of fruits.

4.Unwanted stowaways

Some of the unwanted stowaways such as snakes, spiders, and other poisonous vermin are lurking in their bananas. So, if you are going out for a long trip, this kind of unwanted stowaways can expand their horizons by investing in you.  If you happen to hear of tales of boaters who have bitten by these venomous creatures, then you will avoid a bunch of bananas on board.

4. Slippery peels

As a boater, you will fear the potential accident that might occur when your crew slipped on discarded peel left on board. This is because it can cause an accident among your crew. So, the best solution is to avoid bringing bananas on board.

5.Fish repellant

Bananas have a sweet scent and cause stickiness in our hands. Due to that, fish would be scared and will run away. That is why bananas have been blacklisted from the boat by scared fishermen.

6.Illness

It has been found out that most of the fishermen become ill after eating bananas. Due to that, many of the fishermen have decided not to carry any of the banana on board.

Conclusion

It very hard to believe that bananas are not needed in the fishing boat. But if you keenly read the reasons mentioned above, you will be convinced. So, take your time and read.
